If you have used Miele vacuum bags for years, the newer HyClean packaging may look unfamiliar. Customers sometimes worry that HyClean bags are different, smaller, or intended only for European vacuums. In most cases, the important change is the name and packaging—not the fit of the corresponding bag family.
The simple answer
If your vacuum previously used a Miele AirClean GN bag, the current HyClean GN bag is the correct replacement. If it previously used AirClean FJM, choose HyClean FJM.
Match the letter code and you can purchase the current HyClean version with confidence. The change from AirClean-branded packaging to HyClean-branded packaging does not mean that a GN bag became smaller or stopped fitting a GN-compatible vacuum.
Why did the name change?
Miele historically used HyClean branding in Europe while many customers in the United States became familiar with AirClean-branded FilterBags. Miele’s current U.S. replacement-bag range now primarily uses names such as GN HyClean Air and FJM HyClean Air.
This can be confusing because AirClean also remains the name of Miele’s filtration system and certain exhaust filters. Seeing “HyClean” on the bag package does not mean that the bag is incompatible with a vacuum that previously used an AirClean package.
The bag code matters more than the package name
| Current bag family | Common compatible vacuum lines |
|---|---|
| GN HyClean Air | Classic C1, Complete C2, Complete C3, S2, S5 and S8 |
| FJM HyClean Air | Complete C1, Compact C1, Compact C2, S4 and S6 |
| TU HyClean Air | Guard L1 and Guard S1 |
| CO HyClean Air | Guard M1 |
The names GN, FJM, TU and CO identify different bag families. Those families are not interchangeable with one another. The interchangeable part is the older and newer branding within the same family—for example, AirClean GN to HyClean GN.
Are HyClean GN bags smaller than AirClean GN bags?
No. A current genuine Miele HyClean GN bag is designed for the same GN-compatible vacuum families listed by Miele. A package redesign or a folded bag can make the product appear different before installation, but that does not make it a different-size bag family.
What should I check before ordering?
- Look for the bag code—such as GN or FJM—on your older package or inside the vacuum’s bag compartment.
- Match that same code on the new HyClean package.
- Do not choose solely by the words AirClean or HyClean.
- If you own a newer Guard vacuum, verify whether it uses TU or CO bags.
